Porthor - Whisting Sands - LL53 8LH
Porthor is a beautiful, sandy remote beach at the north-western end of the Llyn peninsula - just a short 15 min drive from our self-catering farmhouse and barn conversion here at Cae Garw, North Wales.
A National Trust owned beach - it has featured on BBC's Coast programme - and Ben Fogle's "Coastal Walks with my Dog" - (he stayed here at our Barn Conversion while filming ! ).
It is a most popular beach in high season - backed by high cliffs, great surf and loads of rock pools to keep the kids entertained. The beach derives its name from the squeak or whistle made by the oddly shaped sand particles being rubbed together when walked on.
Porthor (Whistling Sands) is a popular beach for surfers and bodyboarders because of the way that the waves break in large swells - especially during a south westerly gale force wind.
A coastline path to the west of the beach will take you along the Lleyn Coastal Path to the headlands at Anelog near Aberdaron - with stunning views towards Bardsey Island. The coastline to the east of the beach will take you to Porth Iago - a small and secluded sandy beach . A great walk for seeing fabulous sunsets.
For the keen angler - bass, codling, plaice, rays, gurnards, turbot, huss, wrasse, conger, dabs, coalfish and whiting are all commonly caught.
There is a NT car park in the lane above the beach and a seasonal café.
